By constructing a panel data econometric model, the paper analyzes the environmental effects of FDI from four types of different outflow areas in the three major economic regions in China with the data from 2003~2015. The study finds that the environmental effect of FDI from different outflow areas shows obvious character of heterogeneity, and to all the three economic regions of China. Furthermore, the three economic regions all show relatively obvious differences on the environmental effects of introducing FDI. Therefore, China should gradually improve the weights of the environmental factors in the process of the adjustment of foreign investment utilization structure, establish and perfect the FDI classification of environmental impact assessment system, strengthen the environmental effect orientation of FDI project audit, and explore targeted environmental regulation policy on regions at different economic development stages.
